How did ming china's relationship with japan differ from its relationship with korea?

The Ming´s dynasty took control of Korea as a vassal state upon the fall of the Mongols. Different to this was the relationship with Japan, which , during the Ming´s dynasty sent many trade and diplomatic missions to China.
