Describe what a shaded relief map is.

Shaded relief maps are flat yet appear to be three-dimensional images of the physical features on Earth’s surface such as mountains, valleys, plateaus, and canyons. Relief maps show three-dimensional landforms accurately through the use of colors and shadows. In this way, shaded relief maps clearly distinguish between hills and valleys.

A fascinating feature of a shaded relief map is how it displays shadows based on the position of the sun. The landscape that faces the west (and the setting sun) is always brighter than the area facing the east. The east-facing landscape is shaded because of the position of the sun. The contrast between the light and dark areas creates a three-dimensional illusion.
