5. Why does Shafak believe advising creative writing students to ‘write what you know’ is not the proper way to guide them? Because writing what you know isn’t helpful in widening your horizons, so to speak. It keeps you in your little circle and doesn’t offer any opportunities to empathize with other people or create different and exciting things.
