The large number of alu elements within the human genome (500,000 copies per genome) creates opportunities for homologous recombination due to sequence identities. some of these homologous recombination events can result in unequal recombination, wherein deletions and duplications may occur. if these occur in exons that are adjacent to alu elements, it can alter the function of an existing protein, leading to loss of function, or gain of novel function, which can result in disease.
