Biomolecules Research Objective: Students will be able to research an interaction between two biomolecules and give a detailed explanation of one example of an interaction. Background: Interactions are a key aspect of biology. In fact without interaction there is no life. These interactions occur at the smallest levels, molecules (what you will be researching today), to larger things like different communities of organisms in an environment. The phenomenon we observe in the world would be drastically different if they occurred in isolation, as such, as a scientist, questions about how two things interact are at the heart of most if not all experimentation. Today we are going to research the interactions of very small compositions of matter, i. e, molecules, specifically biomolecules. Our four biomolecules, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids all exist together and interact with each other in different ways. Directions: Research one of the following interactions or one that you come up with on your own, specifically looking at a summary of how the interaction takes place and what is the outcome of the interaction? You will then write a story or essay on this interaction describing how and why it occurs (the underlined questions above). Interaction ideas Carbohydrates and Lipids: How does the body convert excess carbs into fat tissue (Adipose)? Carbohydrates and Proteins: How do carbohydrates fuel protein function? Lipids and Nucliec Acids: In what ways do lipids control/protect Nucleic Acids? (this will be looking at the function of the nuclear envelope). Lipids and Proteins: How do proteins support lipid membranes for cell structure? Proteins and Nucliec Acids: How do proteins regulate DNA expression? Nucleic acids and Proteins: How are Nucliec acids used to create proteins?
