Project: installing an operating system
installing an operating system is a key task for new computer support technicians, so now that you understand the process it is time for some practice.

find a new computer or one that you can conduct a clean installation on. make sure you have permission to work with a computer, especially if it already had a working operating system and data on it. if that is the case, make sure to back up the data before you make any changes. if access to computers is limited, you may work with a group to conduct the installations, making sure to take your notes about decisions and reasons for them.

if you do not have access to a physical computer or cannot get permission to work with a computer with a system already installed, write out and illustrate the steps as you work through the process (for example, partitioned hard drive into two partitions (drives c and d), installed the operating system onto drive c, etc.)

install a version of windows on the computer. if you are doing this with an actual computer, make sure to take notes about each step.

once you have done the installation, test to see that the system is working properly. now go back and reinstall the operating system and make different choices than you did for the first installation, remember to take notes.

once you have done the second installation, test to see that the system is working properly. make note of any differences in performance and see if you can attribute that to any of the choices you made during the installation.

write a report (at least 900 words) explaining what you did and why you made certain choices. use a table, illustrations, or some other graphic representation to demonstrate any differences between the two installations.
