Let’s look at the following sentence and note how the singular collective noun “audience” is paired with the singular verb “laughs.”

The audience laughs at all the right moments.

Thus, even though an audience will typically have more than one person, it is only one audience and will require a singular verb in order to avoid a subject-verb agreement error.

If it is functioning as a single unit, then the subject is considered to be as if it's the third person singular so the verb is always in the third person singular form. Example would be "The audience is clapping". If you were to observe them as a large number of individuals instead of an entity, you could write "The audience are clapping"
