People have always developed a system of checks and balances for the society to operate smoothly. The idea of speed limit is a consequence of such a need. Speed limit is in place to enforce safer driving conditions on the road. Although some disagree on a set speed limit, most people adhere to the laws of the road.
Speed limits have varied throughout time and location as people's needs have grown with technology. The first speed limit was set in the United Kingdom at 10 miles per hour (or 16 kilometers per hour) in 1861. Currently, there are at least two places in the world, Germany and the Isle of Man, that do not have a set speed limit for 50 percent of their motorways. As of May 2010, Polish roadways will have the highest speed limit of 87 miles per hour.
Although critics believe that speed limit restricts people's ability to judge for themselves, speed limits are usually established according to the flow of traffic. The traffic engineers maintain that speed limits should be set at a level at or under 85 percent of the people are driving. Statistics suggest that those driving 10 miles per hour under the speed limit are more likely to get into an accident compared to those driving at the speed limit. Thus, slower is not always safer when it comes to speed limit.
