Read the passage:

Chester’s best friend Alfonso was standing out on the lawn calling his name. Chester didn’t want to have to tell Alfonso that he couldn’t come to the hockey game that afternoon. But his mother had told Chester that he had to stay home and clean his room and spend some time with his family.

Finally Chester walked outside. “I’m really sorry, Alfonso, but I can’t go,” he said, looking at the ground and kicking a stone.

“Oh man, Chester. That’s horrible. I was looking forward to this all week. Why do you always have to do so much stuff with your dumb family? I don’t!”

Chester blushed. “I know, but I don’t really mind. I haven’t seen my sister all week because she was on a college trip, and I want to hear how it went.”

Alfonso scowled at Chester. Then his face softened and he spoke. “Nah, man, that’s cool. I kind of wish my family would do stuff together. I’m always alone.” And he turned and ran off, waving back at his buddy.

Read the following excerpt from life on the mississippi by mark twain. no girl could withstand his charms. he "cut out" every boy in the village. when his boat blew up at last, it diffused a tranquil contentment among us such as we had not known for months. but when he came home the next week, alive, renowned, and appeared in church all battered up and bandaged, a shining hero, stared at and wondered over by everybody, it seemed to us that the partiality of providence for an undeserving reptile had reached a point where it was open to criticism. how does twain's use of understatement serve his purpose? be sure to use specific details from the text to support your answer.
