Without a doubt, war is a terrible thing, the worst disaster that humanity has ever faced. It leaves death and damage in its wake, as well as sickness and famine, poverty, and ruin. There are many who see war as magnificent and heroic, as something that brings out the best in men, but that does not change the fact that war is a horrible, horrific catastrophe. There has never been a time in history when conflict has had such catastrophic consequences. We've had long and brief wars of various kinds. In light of this, it appears pointless to speak of a permanent and everlasting peace or to create strategies for its creation. When people cannot constantly live in peace, expecting so many nations to live in an eternal state of peace is unrealistic. Furthermore, there will always be significant differences of opinion among nations, diverse perspectives on issues of international importance, and profound disparities in policy and ideology, which cannot be resolved by conversations alone.
