We were crowded with hundreds of other men, women, and children in the
airless hull of the ship. Some men spent the whole journey in chains, but my
father was not one of them, as he had a calm and dignified temperament. We
were often sick from the poor food, the horrific smells, and the rough seas.
Some died on the journey.
