Where have settlements tended to become established in South America?

The settlements are usually along rivers, seas or casts. This way, the people living there have access to water. Also, they would live where the soil was fertile so they can grow crops for eating. They would also try to live somewhere with geographic protective boundaries so invasions for warriors and other tribes would decrease.
