When the united states decided to build a canal across Central America, Panama was a part of Colombia.

The United States under President Theodore Roosevelt bought the French asset from the canal zone in 1902. At that time, Panama was a part of Colombia. The Colombian government refused the treaty that the US offered to build the canal.  

The Canal project started in 1904, a year after Panama independence from Colombia. Ten years later, on August 15, 1914, this canal officially opened. It was the most expensive project in US history at that point by spending more than $350 million.

During World War II, the Panama Canal played a vital role for the US by allowing ships easily between the Atlantic and Pacific. The Panama Canal has been a vital component for the global trade routes and continues to be updated and maintained.

The Panama canal remained in the United States territory until 1977. A process of transferring territorial control from the US to Panama was completed on 31 December 1999.
