Between 1846 and 1860 almost all Texan citizens lived on ranches or farms. During that period of time, the number of farms increased from 1200 to roughly 43000. Land was inexpensive and even available, so that many Texans farmed or raised cattle on their own land instead of working for another person. The main activity in farmers lives was the growing of food crops, such as oats, sweet potatoes and wheat, which constituted a major part of their diet. But, it is important to highlight that only few farmers made profit from those food crops. They also produced cotton to be shipped to Europe. In addition to this activities, they also focused on raising livestock, such as milk cows, and chickens to provide food and make profit.
