The abolitionists were against public slavery. The problem with this is that many, important and influential people agreed with slavery, and these people could act violently with the abolitionists because they felt disrespected by their speech. Moreover, in an area where slavery is considered natural, an abolitionist could lose respect for being considered unpatriotic and disrespectful for fighting for the freedom of blacks.
