Ms. Sandra Caufield was walking from the L-Train station in Canarsie to her home several blocks away. As she was walking down Rockaway Parkway, she saw a young woman running in the opposite direction on the same side of the street. As she passed Ms. Caufield, the woman grabbed Ms. Caufield’s purse. After a very short struggle, the purse’s strap broke and the young woman ran away. No one in the area tried to stop her. Two days later, after having previously given a description of the young woman to police, Ms. Caufield was called into the police station to view a photo lineup of several possible suspects.

Ms. Caufield had identified the attacker as a Latina woman in her late 20s with dark brown hair. The sheet of 8 photos placed in front of Ms. Caufield is shown to the left. The primary investigator in her case gave her the sheet and asked her to identify the attacker.

Evaluate the actions of the police in this lineup. Were their actions correct? Where did they make mistakes? Be detailed. Consider how witness memory can be tampered with as well as proper lineup procedures. Your answer must be 4-6 sentences long.
