Maximum or minimum value for a quadratic function:

y = -2x² + 4x - 1,    a = -2, b = 4, c = -1

y =  (4ac - b²)/4a    
 
                                          =   (4*(-2)(-1) - 4²) / 4*(-2)
                                      
                                           =    (8 - 16) /-8 =   -8/-8 = 1.

Since  the value it positive, it is a maximum.
