6x - 3 = 5x - 5

First you can combine the whole numbers (3 and 5) together on one side of the equation by either adding 3 to both sides, or 5. Below I've added 3 to both sides

6x = 5x - 5 + 3

6x = 5x - 2

Then you can combine the x's on one side. Below, I've subtracted 5x from both sides of the equation:

6x - 5x = -2

Because 6x - 5x = x ... x = -2
