Since the late 1990's manufacturers have used crumb rubber in the construction of synthetic turf fields. Tires or other rubber products are processed into small pieces and used as infill to cushion the fields and support the blades of artificial grass. In 2009 University of Washington Women's Associate Head Soccer Coach Amy Griffin noticed what seemed to be an unusual number of cancer cases among soccer players in Washington State; Coach Griffin was especially concerned about the number of goalies that had contracted cancer. Several studies, for example EPA Study, State of Washington Study, and Oxford University Study among others, were conducted to investigate possible reasons for the cancer increase; attention soon focused on the rubber crumbs that adhered to the skin of players and got into the eyes and noses of goalies. The Washington State study reported that each year during the 5-year period 2009-2013 the cancer rate in the state of Washington was 23.6 per 100,000 for people 6-24 years of age. During the period 2009-2013, each year 117,000 people 6 to 24 years of age played in the Washington Youth Soccer Association, with the vast majority playing on crumb rubber synthetic fields. Use the Poisson distribution to answer the following questions.1. If soccer players age 6-24 in Washington State have the same rate of cancer as all people age 6-24 in Washington State, what is the expected number of cancer cases each year among the 117,000 soccer players? (Use 1 decimal place).2. In the years 2009-2013 there was an average of 37 cancer cases per year among the 117,000 Washington State soccer players age 6-24. If soccer players age 6-24 in Washington State have the same rate of cancer as all people age 6-24 in Washington State, what is the probability of 37 or more cancer cases in 1 year among the soccer players? (Use 2 decimal places).
