After a heavy storm, a flooded retention pond contains approximately 281,000 gallons of water. A pump is set up to pump the water into a different pond that currently only contains 1,000 gallons of water. The pump can pump water at the rate of 5,000 gallons per hour. Create an equation to show how many hours it will take for the two ponds to have the same volume of water. Be sure to define your variable.

The pump will stop operating when the volume of the flooded pond is reduced to 125,000 gallons or when the two ponds have the same amount of water, whichever comes first. When will the pump stop operating? Justify your answer using a table.

Data from 2005 for various age groups show that for each $100 increase in the median weekly income for whites, the median weekly income of blacks increases by $105. also, for workers of ages 25 to 54 the median weekly income for whites was $676 and for blacks was $527. (a) let w represent the median weekly income for whites and b the median weekly income for blacks, and write the equation of the line that gives b as a linear function of w. b = (b) when the median weekly income for whites is $760, what does the equation in (a) predict for the median weekly income for blacks?
