3y - 2 = y + 4

what is the value of y? i got 3 from a calculator but i'm having trouble understanding why. could anyone briefly explain how you get this answer?

my attempt is:
3y - 2 = y + 4
+2 +2
3y = y + 6
here is where i get stuck. if you divide, the y value goes away. but you cannot subtract because there is nothing to subtract could someone explain my next step and/or where i am going wrong?
