How to turn a mixed number into simplest form

Example: 2 6/12, divide the main fraction-6/12 by the GCF-greatest common factor- the gcf to this will be 6, 6/12=1/2= 2 1/2

Using the pizza example, 50/100 and 1/2 is the same amount of pizza, but 1/2 is a simpler fraction and is easier to visualize. Reducing a fraction does not change the actual value of the fraction, it just creates a more simple number. Odd and even fractions are simplified the same way. To simplify an improper fraction, first change it into a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator. In the example 12/5, divide 12 by 5 to get 2 remainder 2. The mixed number is 2 2/5.
