Factor normally
(y-12)(y-4)
Divide both numbers by the previous a value
(y-12/3)(y-4/3)
(y-4)(y-4/3)
Because -4/3 does not become a whole number change the three to become the coefficient of y
(y-4)(3y-4)
Check by foiling
Final (3y-4)(y-4)
