But I will also solve by substitution:

Set one equation equal to the other:

x - 1 = 1/2 x + 1

Add one to both sides of the equation:

x = 1/2 x + 2

Subtract 1/2 x from both sides of the equation:

1/2 x = 2 

Multiply both sides of the equation by two:
x = 4. 
Plug this value of x into the first equation:
y = 4 - 1 
Solve for y:
y= 3 
Check the solution by plugging the values of x and y into either equation:
3 = 1/2(4) + 1
3= 2 + 1 
3 = 3
