Conceptual physics:
2019-20 independent study #1
extreme leaf jumping
2-day project (due monday, november 18th, 2019 at the beginning of class)
what you'll need to know:
1. who is jumping
2. how much they weigh
3. how fast they hit the pile
4. what kind of force do they make impact
5. how many leaves fall from a typical tree
6. what leaves would be best for breaking the fall and why
7. how long would it take a person (man hours) to gather that amount of leaves
8. find videos that show people trying to make extremely large leaf piles
9. estimate the number of leaves per cubic foot and estimate how many cubic feet you'd
need to make for a safe landing
10. what additional equipment you'd need if you actually tried this at home.
c! ) how long to hit pile? ? d: sac?
(a=-32,1 fels
criteria for all:
• 3 people jump: a 75-lb 3rd grade boy, a 160-lb high school junior (boy), and your 320-ib
uncle joe (age 44).
3 heights: 12 feet (off the top of the garage), 18 feet (out of the 2nd story window), and
25 feet (off the top of the roof of the house)
how big would the piles need to be for each of the scenarios to allow each of the people
to land safely? (2) how fast? ? cvr-v; rat)
(3) momentum mass x velocity
what you'll need to report: (a typed write-up, with power point presentation)
1. answer all the questions above
2. who was in your group, and what did each member specifically do to the project
3. whatever numbers you come up with for solutions, you have to "scientifically" back it
up with logic and reason.
