A plant sits on a bookshelf. The diagram of the forces acting on the plant is the normal force in the upward vertical direction and the gravitational force in the downward direction.

A force is regarded as a push or pull. In the equilibrium of forces, the sum total of forces acting on a given object with constant mass is equal to the product of the mass of the object and its acceleration.

The sum of the forces can also be measured and resolve into vertical components and horizontal components.
