Recall that a Rube Goldberg device is a series of events that performs a simple task. For this performance task you will design a Rube Goldberg device to show the transfer of energy from step to step.
The device must include:
At least 5 steps.
At least 3 different simple machines.
A conversion of potential energy into kinetic energy.
A conversion of kinetic energy into potential energy.
A conversion of gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy.
A neat and colored drawing of your device that includes numbers for each step.
A description of each step of your device, including what type of energy transfer occurred, and how this
occurred.
A description of what simple task your device is supposed to accomplish.

Two steel balls, each of mass m, are welded to a light rod of length l and negligible mass and are initially at rest on a smooth horizontal surface. a horizontal force of magnitude f is suddenly applied to the rod as shown. determine (a) the instantaneous acceleration a of the mass center g and (b) the corresponding rate at which the angular velocity of the assembly about g is changing with time.

Certain bacteria (such as aquaspirillum magnetotacticum) tend to swim toward the earth’s geographic north pole because they contain tiny particles, called magnetosomes, that are sensitive to a magnetic field. if a transmission line carrying 100 a is laid underwater, at what range of distances would the magnetic field from this line be great enough to interfere with the migration of these bacteria? (assume that a field less than 5% of the earth’s field would have little effect on the bacteria. take the earth’s field to be 5.0 * 10-5 t, and ignore the effects of the seawater.)
