Transkei in 1918

Initially he was called Rolihlahla Mandela and was born to the Madiba clan. He was born in a small African village known as Mvezo. Nelson’s mother was known as Nonqaphi Nosekeni, his father was known as, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela

Award  

Nelson Mandela lived in the royal hood of King Thembu as an advantage , resulting from his father's job of the principal counsellor to the Acting King of Thembu.His father died while he was 9 Mandela was given the award of young Rolihlahla at the Great Place in Mqhekezweni.  

King

Mandela went through his formal education to the university level where he enrolled for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University College of Fort Hare. He did not complete the degree there; he was expelled for joining a student protest. The King was furious and decided that he and his cousin would be forcefully married to wives organized by the king.  

Johannesburg

Mandela together with his cousin Justice, ran to Johannesburg, instead and arrived there in 1941. Mandela secured a job as a mine security officer. He later met Walter Sisulu who introduced him to Lazer Sidelsky.

Honor

Mandela joined the University of South Africa to continue with his studies. He worked hard there and completed his studies, acquiring a first class honors degree. After this he later resolved to return to Fort Hare upon his graduation in the year 1943

African National Congress  

In 1942 while still studying, Nelson Mandela Joined the ANC and later aided in the formation of the (ANCYL) African National Congress Youth League; a youth league that had a common interest towards fighting segregation

Apartheid rule  

Mandela dropped his then political interest on learning what the intentions of the apartheid government were up to. He merged interests with other South Africans to fight the apartheid rule. He insisted on a free democratic and inclusive election

Law firm  

In the year 1952 Mandela and Oliver Thabo , established a law firm Thabo and Mandela, he was allowed to practice with his BA Degree and a diploma .This marked the beginning of his career in law

(a) power pylon (b) telecommunications substation  

This rated a failed mission; only two of the power Pylons were blown up. The mission was to be undertaken jointly by the ANC and the MK. The mission was staged on the 16th day of 1961

Unarmed protests  

The military wing of ANC announced the failure of the plans to sabotage an electric power station and relaunched its quest with unarmed protests. From that point henceforth the military wing resolved to armed protests

Charged for leaving South Africa without a permit alongside another charge of inciting workers to strike.

In January 1962 Nelson adopted a name; David Motsamayi. He used the name and travelled along Africa and also to the UK

Answer : Robben Island prison

At this point he was facing a death penalty for inciting workers and leaving the country without a permit. However, he was spared by a judge who sentenced him to five year imprisonment.

Answer : Denied him a chance of attending the burial of his son

Mandelas son, Thembekile Mandela died on a tragic road accident .Mandela was in the Robben island prison and was denied the chance to attend the burial. Thembekile’s sister was 4 years old at the point of death of his brother

Mandela was offered a chance out of prison by the then government but refused to come out until his plea was heard. He advocated for a totally democratic leadership that was not based on a segregated procedures.

The Bantu Homelands Citizenship Act No. 26 comes into action. It demanded revoking of Blacks of their South African citizenship and makes them citizens of one of the South African homelands or Bantus-tans irrespective of their real residence.

At this point the then government started talks to incorporate him in their administration. However Mandela turned them down claiming he would not give in or come out of prison until apartheid was lifted and a fully democratic election held

Mandela rejected at least three or four times of release he was offered by the apartheid government. He refused, claiming that all he was asking for had to be fulfilled, this was , an end to the apartheid government and start of a fully democratic election.

Answer : 1990  

The apartheid government released him in the year 1990 after 14 month imprisonment, at house at Victor Vorster Prison near Paarl .He met with his counterparts who had been released 9 months earlier. He was put to stand in for Mbeki

Answer : Democratically elected president  

The apartheid government handed over the tools of power to Nelson Mandela making him the first black president of South Africa. This is after a long struggle with imprisonment by the apartheid government. Mandela served for one term,later Thabo Mbeki took over
