Instead, it is based on principles that people adhere to out of conviction, even when these go against their natural instincts or desires. Moreover, while religion can sometimes inform ethics, they are not the same thing (even in the case of religious people).

On the other hand, laws are also principles that regulate behaviour. However, while ethics are personal, laws rule all of society. Laws are not based on feelings or on religion (in secular countries). Instead, they are based on reason and principles of fairness and justice.
