Beginning some time before the 3rd millennium ended in 3000 B. C.E., the Harappan of the Indus Valley began to trade with empires in Mesopotamia. Huge quantities of grain, textiles, timber, and metal ores were imported and exported between the two civilizations. One historian compares the relationship to the attraction between two magnets because the Harappan and Mesopotamian groups began to prefer trading with each other. This led the two civilizations to work together to direct the flow of the region’s resources so that their peoples could use as much of them as possible. The Harappan and the Mesopotamians used both overland routes and a water route through the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea to accomplish this goal.
