The poverty line for a family of 4 in the US is 26,200 for the year 2020.  The calculation does not consider variations in the cost of living depending on where you live and health costs that can considerably affect a poor person on two levels: it adds an expense and also affects their health and thus their ability to earn.

The federal government in the United States uses the federal poverty level as a measure of income in order to determine eligibility for certain subsidies and programs. The levels are revised every year in January in order to factor in inflation. For 2020, the federal poverty level for a family of 4 is   $26,200. There is however a lot that can impact the level of earnings and relative poverty and quality of life for families in the United States.  One is the cost of living at a city level or local level as this can vary quite substantially for people living in cities with high real estate values like New York or San Francisco.  Health care costs also are disproportionately burdensome for the poor and they are more at risk of losing their income source if they get sick or develop chronic health conditions.
