French Indochina is the region which comprised several French colonies in Asia's Southeast. It was mainly constituted by the current territory of Vietnam.  

The region was under the Vichy regime during the nazi occupation of France in WWII. When the war ended, a communist organization named Viet Minh, declared the independence of Vietnam. This triggered the start of the First Indochina War in 1946, fought between the French forces and Viet Minh.
