The reason why Adrienne Rich refers to sexuality refers as a political institution because it making way for the male right of physical, economic, and emotional access to women. She believes heterosexuality is not only descriptions of sexual desires, practices, and orientations but it is a political institution. The process of heterosexuality as an institution is so inserted into daily life that while heterosexuality may be personally meaningful it can also be an oppressive social institution.
