Kenya's politics has been characterized since independence in 1963 by a highly centralized presidentialist regime, although the multiparty democratic constitution is nominally respected. In fact, the KANU was the majority party and in 1982 the National Assembly amended the constitution, making the country one-party. This state of affairs lasted until 1991, when the Assembly repealed that provision, but in the 1992 and 1997 elections, President Daniel Arap Moi and KANU held respectively the presidential and majority positions in Parliament. During the twentieth century, the black majority struggled to regain their rights, which were suppressed for decades by the white minority, dominant politically and economically, a struggle that played a large part in the country's recent history.
