casey was offered a full scholarship to a prestigious conservatory, but his alcohol use got more and more out of control, and in addition to suffering from several interfering symptoms, he was forced to drop out of school after the first semester. he was also very much in debt because of his alcohol use and had estranged himself from his family. casey's alcohol use disorder would be specified as

AUD or the Alcohol Use Disorder specified in ICD-10-CM Diagnosis.

Casey was having the disorder usually known as AUD. Problem drinking that becomes severe is given the medical diagnosis of “alcohol use disorder” or AUD.  AUD is a chronic relapsing brain disease characterized by compulsive alcohol use, loss of control over alcohol intake, and a negative emotional state when not using. To be diagnosed with AUD, individuals must meet certain criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Under DSM–5, the current version of the DSM, anyone meeting any two of the 11 criteria during the same 12-month period receives a diagnosis of AUD.
