If you want to tell someone to do something, you must give a command. Since a command is addressed directly to someone, the understood recipient of the command is “you.” Or, if you are included in the recipient group, it can be “us.” The “you” is almost never stated when an English command is given—as in “take out the trash”—but it is common in Spanish to use the subject pronoun for “you” ( tú, usted, ustedes, vosotros/as) after the command form of the verb. If a verb ends in – er or – ir, the present tense tú ending for – ar verbs is used to create a negative tú command.
