José de San Martín fue uno de los líderes latinoamericanos más importantes para en las guerras de independencia frente a España. En Argentina es considerado el padre de la patria, mientras que en Chile y en Perú se lo considera el libertador del país.

Nació en la ciudad de Yapeyú, en el Virreinato del Río de la Plata (en la actual provincia argentina de Corrientes). Hijo de padres españoles, en 1781 la familia se mudó a Buenos Aires y dos años después a la ciudad de Cádiz. Estudió en una escuela militar en Madrid y Málaga, y comenzó su carrera militar a la edad de once años, cuando se unió al Regimiento de Murcia. Luchó contra los moros en Orán y Melilla en el norte de África.

En 1811 terminó su carrera en el ejército español y se fue a Buenos Aires, donde desde 1810 gobernaba una junta patriota. Desde ese momento y hasta 1816, San Martín combatió frente a los españoles por la independencia de las Provincias Unidas del Río de La Plata (hoy Argentina).  También colaboró con la independencia chilena, y en 1821 conquistó Lima y declaró al Perú una república independiente. Después de desacuerdos con Simón Bolívar, se fue a Francia en 1822.
