The President of the United States is indirectly elected by the United States Electoral College for a term of four years, and with the possibility of only re-election under the 22nd Amendment of the constitution, ratified in 1951. In the indirect system, each state is assigned a number of votes equal to the total number of the delegation of representatives and senators in Congress. The District of Columbia, since the 23rd Amendment to the constitution, has also been assigned electoral votes. The candidate who wins the election in the state in question receives all the state election votes, with few exceptions, from some states that distribute the election votes according to election preferences. The candidate who gets the simple majority of votes in all states becomes the President-Elect. If no candidate succeeds, the House of Representatives elects the President.

The Constitution requires that the presidential candidate must be a born American citizen;  be at least 35 years old;  and have been a permanent resident of the United States for the past fourteen years.
