During a period of high volcanic activity, a large island is formed by a volcanic eruption. Some
of the first organisms to reach the new island are some of the earliest butterflies found on
Earth. Ants and bees appear on the island after it forms as well. Using the geologic timescale
links, construct a timeline with appropriate time divisions for the history of the island, giving the
approximate date of its formation based on the organisms found there. In addition, place the
following events on the timeline at the appropriate locations on the timeline:
• grasses begin to appear on the island
• pigs and deer are carried to the island from the mainland during a large storm
• modern birds fly to the island from the mainland
• the most recently occurring ice age affects the climate of the island
• a rat is carried to the island on a floating log
