The Steller sea lion has been listed as a threatened species throughout its habitat range since 1990. In 1997, however, the sea lion population west of 144° W longitude was reclassified as endangered. An organization dedicated to the protection of sea lions is lobbying for stronger enforcement of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Even if its efforts are successful, why is the Marine Mammal Protection Act alone still insufficient to protect the sea lions? (2 points) Sea lions live in waters that extend beyond U. S. jurisdiction. The law applies only to juvenile sea lions, not to fully grown adults. There is controversy as to whether sea lions are truly covered under the law. Native American cultures are excluded from the restrictions on hunting sea lions. The law does not apply to animals tagged for research before the law was passed.
