Please help ASAP! Thank you! Why are race / ethnicity still used as a defining feature that separates / divides people in the world?

In our world people care a lot about the way things are run and part of that has to do with the way people look. Today you can see in society that so many are being put down for their race or ethnicity. If people as a whole can't love everyone the same and stop their discrimination then there will never be peace. Culture makes us believe that people should all be like us in every way and we are told that when they aren't we don't have to like them or pay them any mind which causes pay throughout and anger that will eventually come back at them.
