Denial:

Proposed by Anna Freud denial is a defense mechanism in which a person refuses to accept reality, stunting their awareness of external events. Example: an alcoholic refusing to admit they have a drinking problem.

Projection:

Also proposed by Anna Freud projection is a psychological defense where one projects their unwanted feeling onto another person. Example: Hating someone and believing that they hate you to justify it.

Displacement:

Displacement is the directing of feelings, usually anger onto a less powerful target. Example: Being frustrated at work and coming home and yelling at your spouse or kids for no reason.

Regression:

Temporary or permanent movement back in psychological development when faced with stress. Example: Someone being nervous or scared about an event to come so they begin sucking their thumb.

Sublimation: 

Satisfying an impulse by doing something socially acceptable. Example: playing a sport to get your anger out.

Rationalization:

A conscious distortion of facts to make an event or impulse feel less threatening. Example: explaining a death as God's will to help accept it.

Reaction Formation:

A defense mechanisms where a person acts the opposite of the way they think or feel. Example: Treating someone you really don't like in an overly friendly manner.
