Grit is passion and perseverance in the pursuit of long-term goals, which in this case is Jim’s

academic career. Grit would help Jim earn better grades in his class as he can use it to help study

harder and persevere through excessive strenuous tasks like studying or taking a lot of practice.

His peer group can help Jim focus better and encourage him to do better with his work and help

him have a sense of achievement motivation. Achievement motivation is when someone has a

strong desire for significant accomplishment like for example, mastering things for people, ideas,

and ect. This will help Jim have a high standard and thus further motivate himself to do better

academically.

Ostracism is deliberate social exclusion of individuals or groups. Ostracism can cause one to feel

left out and upset, which can eventually lead up to lack of motivation and even depression. Jim

would no longer want to pursue the grades he desires.

Narcissism is excessive self-love and self-absorption. This could hinder Jim’s pursuit of getting
