What is a term for a hired musician that records in the studio and sometimes performs in a jazz combo

The correct term is a session musician. Session musicians are professional hired musicians that are used normally on a short term basis in the studios to help record albums they are also used for live performances as the backing musicians so for example in a jazz combo on stage.
