Let’s start with an explanation of half-steps: A half step is the closest key to the beginning note. For example, if we start at C, the notes a half step away would be C#/Db and B. C#/Db is the closest ascending key from C because it is the black key right above C. B is right below C as a white key. It doesn’t matter whether the closest key is black or white, and the half step will always be the nearest key from the starting note.
