M. E. Pleasant was born on Aug. 19, 1814 in Virginia and spent her early years in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

Pleasant earned a reputation as the “Mother of Human and Civil Rights in California"

Pleasant  states that she was born a slave to a voodoo priestess and the Virginia Governor's youngest son, James Pleasant.
