The following is a draft of a student essay. It may contain errors. Agrihoods by Sam D'Souza (1) Which would you prefer: living near neighbors who don't know your name or living near neighbors who are community minded? (2) Would you rather have views of concrete, steel, and glass, or of charming residences surrounded by farmland? (3) If you opted for the latter answer to both questions, then you might enjoy being a resident of an agrihood. (4) You may be wondering, What is an agrihood? (5) An agrihood is an urban planned community built around shared gardens, farmland, pastures, and orchards. (6) Agrihoods don't simply happen. (7) They are intentionally designed for people who want to live in a multi-generational community centered on farming and agriculture as part of daily life. (8) Building homes around golf courses has been a popular trend, where dozens of acres of green space are devoted to a single sport. (9) Many people, however, desire to live in neighborhoods that are more relational, with houses on small lots and the majority of green space devoted to the community's agricultural interests. (10) Agrihoods grow their own organic produce. (11) Members of the community work together to grow seasonal crops such as berries, lettuce, potatoes, and pumpkins. (12) Many agrihoods include places for chickens, goats, and cows to graze free-range rather than being caged or corralled. (13) In addition to produce and livestock, agrihoods often create and support thriving businesses. (14) People outside of the community may be drawn to purchase local produce, honey, cheese, grains, or handcrafts. (15) Restaurants and grocery stores often purchase the local produce from agrihoods. (16) As well as contributing to the local economy, agrihoods help preserve natural resources and protect agricultural land adjacent to cities. (17) Agrihoods create tight, social networks because everyone, from youngest to oldest, is encouraged to participate in the welfare of the community. (18) Agrihoods are designed to be walkable communities, with residences and agricultural enterprises as the focus. (19) The homes all have front porches and small yards so neighbors can easily interact with each other beyond working on the farm or in the gardens. 1 Which statement provides the best conclusion for paragraph 6? A. Agrihoods are more environmentally friendly than traditional neighborhoods. B. Stores that supply home goods and other groceries are located nearby in the community. C. Artwork from local artists can also play a role in community aesthetics. D. Intentional design creates social capital in strong relationships among agrihood residents.
