Ornamentation, in music, the embellishment of a melody, either by adding notes or by modifying rhythms.

In music, ornaments (or embellishments) are musical "flourishes"— usually added notes—that are not usually needed/essential to carry the overall line/pattern of the melody, but are used instead to decorate or "ornament" that line, add extra interest and variety, and give the performer the opportunity to add expressiveness to a song or instrumentation.
