1. Liberalist* and realist theoretical perspectives to international relations have different explanations for the causes of war and the conditions for peace and security. How does liberalism explain insecurity and conflict in international politics? What solutions does liberalism offer for achieving greater peace and security? How does realism explain insecurity and conflict in international politics? What solutions does realism offer for achieving greater stability and security? First, compare and contrast the theoretical perspectives of liberalism and realism on how they explain conflict in the world, and on the solutions they offer to move the world toward greater security. Second, imagine you are the Right Honourable Prime Minister of the Government of Canada or the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Which theoretical approach to international relations would you adopt to guide Canada’s current relations with states/non-state actors, and why? Provide specific empirical evidence and examples in the areas of security, peacekeeping and humanitarian intervention from the course materials to illustrate the differences and similarities between the theoretical perspectives.
