The title of the work was "Madonna of the Meadows". Raphael was born in Urbino in 1483 A.D. and died in Rome in 1520 A.D. It was painted in 1505 A.D. during the High Renaissance in Florence, Italy. The painting shows the Virgin Mary with Christ and St. John the Baptist. St. John the Baptist was the cousin of Christ and also the patron of Florence. The figures in the "Madonna of the Meadows" are arranged in a pyramid formation. This was a technique that Raphael learned from Leonardo. Raphael used a very light color palette in this painting. He used perspective to show that the city was far away from the viewer. Jesus Christ is shown in the painting grabbing the cross of St. John the Baptist. The artwork has an overall sense of harmony and peace.
